Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to purchase john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained active.
